logging goings-on since the flood - The irish Annals are back - De Réir Book of MoyturA

This mural painted by local artist Cormac Cullinan depicts the first event mentioned in four of the main Annals of Ireland, the arrival of Cesair, Noah’s Grand daughter, at Milk Harbour, Streedagh, Co. Sligo with 49 women and one man, who promptly became a salmon. Given that they were the first humans, the local otter was none too pleased. Cesair is purportedly buried adjacent to Boyle Golf Club.

De Réir is the Irish for according to. Our Book of Annals logs the annual facts & checked hear-says which are written up and accumulate at the Scriptorium at Bru Moytura, at the northern extremity of the plateau of Moytura, Co. Sligo. Our sources are cited, a truly here-comes-everybody of facts and weighed hearsay.

FILLING THE 432 year GAP FROM LAST ANNAL OF 1590 TO NOW

CREATING A LIVING MUSEUM THAT SHINES A light ON THE EXTANT IRISH ANNALS PUT TO VELLUM 425A.D. to 1590ad COVERING A PERIOD FROM CREATION TO THE NINE YEARS WAR

The Moytura Project’s Scriptorium is housed in a circular wooden hilltop base overlooking Lough Arrow. Our news-anchorage takes inspiration from the monks & hereditary scribes who kept Annals alive in Ireland across centuries. This is a space to reconnect with the knowledge of ink & parchment making & to bring back to life our scribal heritage, both in technique and event logging.

We wish to connect to that particular dedication that allowed Irish Annals twelve centuries of persistence.  The Annals of Lough Key closed its last log, of its last act in 1590AD, a full stop of to an almost twelve century continuation of Annals-writing. 432 years after this conclusion and half a dozen miles from said lake we have revitalised chronicling line. Currently seeking News of 2022 and 2023.

Short promo for Annals

2020 got reduced to 64 facts across 8 x A1 pages and continues an island-wide lineage known as the Vulgate tradition that ceased in 1590AD.

LOCAL ANNALS

The North West particularly loves chronicling and encyclopedic tomes of times past, that slice of Ireland's pie from Boyle to Ballyshannon gave birth to The Annals of Lough Key, The Annals of Boyle, The Book of Ballymote, of Fenagh, the two of Lecan (Enniscrone), The Annals of Ulster (Upper Lough Erne) & finally, fabulously The Annals of the Four Masters about the Erne Estuary. Jovial facts, gory facts, obscure facts and creepy facts e.g. the closure of the original Lough Derg “pilgrimage,” shut by the Borgia Pope as stated in The Annals of Ulster for 1497; forever blocking that portal to Purgatory on a no longer flat earth ?

The Annals of the Four Masters concluded in 1630

The Annals of the Four Masters concluded in 1630 is an amalgam Annal. The concluding annal of the long vulgate tradition that extends from the original World Chronicle of Eusebius that entered Ireland in the early 420s is that of The Annals of Loch Ce.
